I have spent the whole of my career in the practice or teaching of journalism. I grew up in the English city of Bath and joined a local BBC radio station in London soon after graduating from university in history. Subsequent postings have included reporting from Europe, Africa and the Americas for the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4, presenting news and current affairs programmes for Independent Television News (ITN), being the East Africa correspondent of the Daily Telegraph and becoming the first presenter of BBC World Television channel.
Several days a week at present, I teach television journalism to post-graduate students of journalism at City University, London, and follow developments in the media closely.
At my home in London, I have installed an ISDN radio studio.
